How to Order a Custom Cake From a Home Baker in Bangalore (Eggless, Lead Times, Pricing)
A good cake starts with a good brief.
A cake from a home baker is usually made to order, in small batches, by one person who talks to you directly. That's the appeal — and also why the order works best when you give a clear brief and enough notice. This guide covers what to share, what to ask, and how to compare quotes fairly.
What to tell the baker up front
- Date, time and exact delivery or pickup address — cakes are fragile and heat-sensitive, so the last mile matters.
- Number of people, so the baker can recommend weight and tiers instead of guessing.
- Flavour and filling, and whether it must be eggless. If egg-free is a strict requirement (religious or allergy), ask whether eggless cakes are made separately from egg-based bakes.
- Any allergies — nuts, dairy, gluten — and say so explicitly, even if you think it's obvious.
- Theme and reference photos. Share two or three images you like and one you don't.
- Your budget range. A good baker will tell you what's realistic rather than quietly cutting corners.
How much notice to give
Simple cakes can sometimes be done at short notice, but themed, sculpted or multi-tier cakes usually need several days, and festival weekends fill up early. There's no universal rule — ask each baker for their lead time and their cut-off for changes, and book earlier than you think you need to.
Comparing quotes fairly
| Factor | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Weight and tiers | More cake means more ingredients and baking time. |
| Fondant vs. non-fondant | Fondant work and sculpted toppers take far more hours. |
| Flavour and fillings | Premium chocolate, fruit, nuts and imported ingredients cost more. |
| Delivery | Distance, time slot and whether the baker handles it or you arrange it. |
| Rush orders | Short notice displaces other orders, so some bakers charge extra. |
When two quotes differ a lot, ask what's different — it's usually weight, finish, or ingredients. Cheaper isn't wrong and pricier isn't automatically better; you're paying for hours and ingredients, so make sure you're comparing like for like.
Before you pay
- Ask to see recent photos of similar cakes — not just the best one on the page.
- Check the baker's FSSAI registration number and verify it on the official FoSCoS portal.
- Agree the advance amount, the balance date, and the cancellation or change policy in writing.
- Confirm how the cake will be packed and what to do if it arrives damaged.
